The ingredient lists of conventional hair oils and products are dominated by synthetic chemicals, petroleum derivatives, and alcohol-based compounds — many of which strip, coat, or irritate the very scalp they claim to treat. SPURT contains none of them.
What's in most hair oils & products
Conventional products commonly contain:
- Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate) Harsh detergents that strip the scalp of its natural oils, causing dryness, irritation, and scalp microbiome imbalance. A common trigger for a sensitized scalp.
- Silicones (Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone) Coat the hair shaft with a synthetic film that creates an illusion of smoothness — but builds up over time, blocks moisture from penetrating, and can leave hair limp, brittle, and dependent on the product.
- Mineral Oil & Petrolatum Petroleum by-products used as cheap moisturizers. They sit on the scalp surface, can clog follicles, and provide no nutritional benefit to the hair or scalp.
- Parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben) Synthetic preservatives that extend shelf life. Parabens are known to mimic estrogen in the body and have been linked to hormone disruption. They are directly absorbed through the scalp into the bloodstream.
- Drying Alcohols (SD Alcohol, Isopropyl Alcohol) Added to encourage fast absorption, but are potent scalp irritants that dry out the scalp and hair shaft with repeated use. Common in styling products and leave-in treatments.
- Synthetic Fragrances A single "fragrance" ingredient can contain dozens of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are known allergens or irritants. No disclosure is required under current cosmetics labelling law.
- PEGs & Propylene Glycol Petroleum-derived compounds used as penetration enhancers and humectants. Can irritate sensitive scalps and may carry contamination risk in lower-grade formulations.

The water-soluble counterpart to rosemary leaf oil — providing the scalp with a concentrated dose of rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid, two potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Works in complement with the oil to soothe scalp irritation and protect the follicle environment.
A lipid-soluble antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals on the scalp caused by UV exposure, pollution, and heat. Protects the structural integrity of hair fiber and scalp lipids, improving shine and softness. Why I Built SPURT.
I started losing my hair at 24. Whether it was genetics, or the aggressive sauna routine I'd built my life around, my hair was thinning fast. By 26, it was undeniable — and it was affecting me in ways I didn't expect.
I live for health and fitness. Training is non-negotiable for me. So when people suggested finasteride, I shut it down immediately. Messing with my hormones — and by extension, my ability to build muscle and recover — was never going to be the answer. I needed something that worked with my body, not against it.
I also needed something that could actually stand up to the sauna. I spend serious time in there. Conventional hair products couldn't handle the heat — they'd either break down or make things worse. I wanted an organic solution built for the way I actually live.
So I went to work. I researched every botanical ingredient tied to scalp health, circulation, and natural DHT balance. I tested formulas for months until I had something I genuinely believed in — and then I used it myself, every day, without exception.
Six months later, close friends and family started pulling me aside to ask what I had done differently. People who had watched my hair thin for years were now asking about it for a completely different reason. It gave me back the confidence that had been quietly withering away along with my hair.
